Carolyn Beecher

Osage Beach, Mo.

Carolyn Beecher, a longtime resident of Creston, died in Osage Beach, Missouri, on Jan. 10, 2018. She was 91 years old.

Born as Carolyn Joyce Askey on March 12, 1926, in Red Oak; she lived the first years of her life there, where her father worked as a seed salesman. Her young life was tragically interrupted when her mother Charlotte Greeley Askey died in 1938 after an extended illness from tuberculosis. Carolyn moved to Creston with her father, Russell Askey, in 1939. When her father died from a sudden heart attack in 1941, her uncle and guardian, Virgil Spicer, made the wise decision to allow her to continue to live in Creston where she had already forged many of the good friendships that would sustain her throughout her life. She lived in the home of Ada Weitgenant until her graduation from Creston High School in 1943.

Carolyn attended Creston Community College and Rosary College (now Dominican University) in Chicago, prior to beginning her long career as an elementary teacher. She completed her bachelor’s degree in elementary education at Drake University in 1971 at the age of 45. She taught various grades in several schools in the Creston School system over four decades and always enjoyed meeting her many former students throughout her life.

Carolyn lived in Creston with her husband, Robert Beecher, who she married on June 24, 1948. She was a longtime member of Holy Spirit Parish. Carolyn especially enjoyed her memberships over the years in PEO (Chapter AZ), Ladies Literary Club, Crestmoor Golf Club and a number of lively bridge clubs. Her frequent lunchtime reunions with “The ’43 Girls” provided her with opportunities to catch-up with dear friends from her high school class, who, like her, remained to raise their families in the Creston area. Although her final years spent in Missouri made communication with them challenging, Carolyn never forgot the places and the beloved friends and family members who formed the stage set and the characters that gave her life’s story its meaning.

Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Maurice Askey, her brother- and sister-in-law Raymond and Jane Beecher, her niece Nancy Beecher Kleeb and her husband Robert, who passed away in 1998. She is survived by her two children and their families who include Bill and Anne Beecher, Mary Anne Beecher and Deb Scott, grandchildren Ben (Nicole) Beecher and Mike (Jessica Smith) Beecher, and her great-grandson, Bramley Beecher. She is also survived by one niece, Barbara Beecher Haith, and two nephews, Bruce and John Beecher, their spouses and their children and grandchildren.

Carolyn will be interred at a later time in Calvary Cemetery in Creston.
