Evelyn Gibbs


Evelyn M. Gibbs, 71, of Greenfield died Thursday, Dec. 21, 2017, at Greater Regional Hospice Home in Creston.

Celebration of life services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, at First Presbyterian Church in Greenfield. The Rev. David Kincaide will officiate the service. Luncheon with the family will follow. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be sent to Steen Funeral Home, PO Box 390, Greenfield, IA 50849. Online condolences may be left at

Evelyn M. Gibbs, daughter of Merrill and Gladys Nichols, was born Jan. 13, 1946. She attended Prussia No. 5 and Bridgewater-Fontanelle schools and graduated with the class of 1964. She attended Iowa State University for two years, then paused her education to marry George (Lans) Gibbs in 1966. Evelyn finished her business management degree at Simpson College, graduating in 1986. After graduating, Evelyn worked at Iowa Student Loan Liquidity Corporation in Des Moines, where she was ultimately promoted to deputy executive director.

Evelyn was a 4-H member, 4-H leader, Adair County 4-H aide. She was a member of Federated Women’s Club, PEO Chapter CA and 50-year member of OES as well as serving as worthy matron. She also served on the boards of the FSA-USDA and Creston AEA.

Evelyn is survived by her husband of 51 years, George (Lans) Gibbs of Greenfield; daughters, Ann Duncan-Gibbs and Jill Gibbs and son-in-law Shan Duncan; brother J. David Nichols; sister Edythe Hill; sisters-in-law, Phyllis Nichols and Lilian Nichols; nieces; nephews and many friends.

Evelyn is preceded in death by her parents, Merrill and Gladys Nichols; brother Lee Nichols; brother-in-law Arthur Hill and niece Gwen Heath.
