Downtown Creston deserves to thrive

From Jim Stalker

Creston

If you will remember, earlier in 2017, I tried to tell you I would look at my business at the end of that year and try to determine if it was worth continuing to stay in business. Most people took that letter as an indication I would close at the end of 2017. Totally not what I was saying. After looking at my sales record as I said I would, showing little to no growth, the smart move would be to quit and go home. The Thompson’s are great people, and they are also suffering a loss of business, but they are hopeful and continuing to keep their businesses open, The Shop and Save, at 111 N. Maple St., and Central Iowa Furniture Mart, also on North Maple Street in the old JC Penny’s building. I have decided to stay open and continue to help them by keeping my store open inside The Shop and Save within the space they have provided me, and we’ll just see what happens. Hopefully, something positive.

A recent statement by one of your new staff members, Denise Caskey, offered hope for the old downtown. As a stranger to Creston, she saw potential and the possibility of new development in the oldest section of town. The newest downtown store, Create Creston, has also seen potential by totally revamping their store.

The ingredients for that potential are available right now. There are countless empty buildings sitting in the downtown, just waiting for low cost rent or purchase. I sure hope someone is working on a plan to rebuild this section of our town. A town the size of Creston should be strong enough to support not only the easy access businesses on the outskirts, but also keep the older inner sections alive and vibrant. The downtown has weathered much change during its long history and deserves to be revitalized once again. It is, after all, the core of our existence.
