We are only 11 days away from Christmas and still no measurable snow. If the long-range forecast is close to accurate, we don’t look to have any snow for quite a while yet. I sure don’t remember ever getting this deep into the season without seeing at least a couple of inches of snow. We aren’t getting any snow here but the poor folks down south got a good lick of snow the other day. I’m not holding out much hope for a white Christmas. Good thing Santa’s sleigh flies!
There is still time to help out the Christmas Basket fund. This Saturday, the baskets will be delivered. The amount of baskets has gone up this year with over 200 to be delivered. The baskets help out over 1,000 people in the area. The fund is running a little behind last year’s totals. So if you would like to donate you can stop by the newspaper office anytime between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
A week from today, winter begins. That’s right, the days will start getting longer again after next Thursday. Although, it sometimes seems like January sure has some short days in it. About the end of January, I’m ready for a break from all the cold, dark days.
With Christmas on a Monday, a lot of people will have a three day weekend this year. It makes it kind of nice for folks to have a little extra time for the event. Maybe we could get it set up to have Christmas a Monday holiday every year!
This is the last scheduled week for many of the folks at the Ferrera “Gummi Bear” plant. I, for one, am sorry to see the plant close. It has been one of those institutions in town that we have been known for for a long time. The folks were always great corporate citizens on donating products for any kind of fundraisers or events around town. Best of luck to all the great employees from the plant on finding new employment. I know there are many companies around the area that will readily take your skills into their businesses. Thanks for all the Gummies over the years!
The newest version of “Star Wars” starts tonight. “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” looks like it will be a Christmas blockbuster film. This is the eighth installment of the series with the ninth and final series film coming out in 2019. There are two anthology films also put out with the series. The first film came out back in 1977, which was 40 years ago. I would not be surprised that more movies show up after the nine series films are done. They have to keep making those BILLIONS of dollars somehow!
Farm & Home
I was surprised to see that Farm & Home here in Creston and Mount Ayr is selling. The Mostek family has run the stores for many years and we will miss the familiar family faces when we go in. I’m glad to see the store is being sold to an organization with multiple stores that will keep it going in the years to come.
I hope everyone gets the majority of what they want for Christmas. The Creston Chamber of Commerce will be announcing the winning tickets for the holiday promotion today. A number of folks will get a mini shopping spree for having the winning ticket.
