I thought I’d include a picture of some the local geese and ducks that a few of us locals shot last weekend. That’s me, Jared Knutstrom and Sky the dog with several of the birds that got within gun range. I bring the picture up with an ask that all local hunters don’t be shy about sending in a picture of your recent good hunt. We would love to run a picture of what local hunters are bagging in the area. Be it birds, deer or any other kind of game that is in season. I’ve seen several large deer pictures that have been taken of recent hunts. If you have a child that has made a major conquest of wildlife please take time to email it in or drop it by the paper office. We are always interested in putting local pictures in the paper. Happy Hunting!
Boy is it getting hard to find employees! It’s no wonder why – the state of Iowa is now down to a 3 percent unemployment rate, which in today’s world is basically full employment. The national rate is down to 4.1 percent. Sioux County in Iowa only has a 1.2 percent unemployment rate. Most of the counties surrounding the Union County area are in the 1.7 to 2.4 percent range. Wow! Good for the workers in the area, but a tough chore for businesses to fill any vacant positions.
The continued loss of baby boomers is only going to make the problem worse in years to come. There are a lot of boomers that are going to need to be replaced over the next three to 10 years.
Small Biz Saturday
This Saturday is Small Businesses Saturday around the nation. Please give your local small businesses a shot for some of your Christmas shopping money. A lot of small local businesses help support many organizations around the area. Small businesses are the backbone of many of small rural communities. We have hundreds of small businesses in Union and its surrounding counties. They do a great job of taking care of the local folks, so get out and give some support. Many of them are your friends and neighbors!
Don’t forget the kids Christmas movies at the Strand in Creston on Saturday and Sunday for the next three weekends. Tickets are free from participating merchants around town. The show this weekend is “Elf.” It’s a funny Christmas classic! It’s always a great way to spend a little time with the family.
It must have been eagles morning on Tuesday. I was north of town a few miles and had three fly over my car. I went about another 3 miles and two flew across the road in front of me. Four miles later, another solo eagle flew right past me. I’ve never seen that many in such a short time span here in south central Iowa. They are neat birds to watch fly.
Not only is the national debt hitting new highs, but so is household debt. The total debt of all U.S. households is now at its highest level ever. Household debt totaled almost $13 trillion for the country. The producer price index increased 2.8 percent in October, which means that inflation may be just around the corner. I know, for one, newsprint has gone up 15 percent just in the last three months. It looks like more things may be on the rise soon.
